Live Q&A:

The Surgicalist Model — an Innovation Helping Surgeons Live Their Best Lives

According to research highlighted by the American Medical Association, doctors are leaving or planning to leave their jobs at alarming rates. Even before the pandemic, experts were predicting a shortage of physicians due to burnout, as well as pointing to an alarming physician suicide rate much higher than the general public’s, even exceeding combat veterans. For many qualified, experienced surgeons, balancing the administrative burdens of running a practice along with on-call duties is unsustainable long-term.

With our aging and growing population, the demand for quality surgical skills is increasing. Like other industries, the expectations of our medical workforce have changed. Some surgeons are considering joining the Great Resignation – at a time when they are needed the most.

There is a solution to this dilemma; it’s called the SURGICALIST MODEL. This innovation is helping surgeons live their best lives right now, allowing them to do the clinical work they’ve dedicated their lives to while pursuing personal activities and goals.

In this 20-minute presentation and live Q&A, Dr. J. William ‘Bill’ Finley, National Director of Acute Care and General Surgery for Synergy Health Partners, will review research and discuss the Surgicalist Model and its impact on surgeons, hospitals and patients, with focus on:

  • Market forces and options to the Great Resignation
  • The Surgicalist Model – an innovation supporting urban and rural hospitals
  • Profile of a Surgicalist
  • Impact on Hospitals and Surgeons
  • Outcomes on hospital programs and patient care

National Director of Acute Care and General Surgery – Synergy Health Partners

Overseeing Trauma, Acute Care and General Surgery programs across the U.S., Dr. Finley brings his leadership, administrative and clinical skills to Synergy Health Partners to support clinicians and hospital facilities in the management of Acute Care and General Surgery programs.

Dr. Finley received his medical degree from the University of Washington in 1996 and completed his General Surgery residency at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He also completed a Surgical Oncology & Endoscopy Fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, and a Trauma & Surgical Care Fellowship at Oregon Health and Sciences University. In January 2008, he and his surgical colleagues in Everett initiated the General Surgery Team (GST), in a partnership between The Everett Clinic and Providence Regional Medical Center-Everett. The GST was an early iteration of hospital-based ‘surgicalist’ type inpatient services, providing 24/7/365 in-hospital surgical coverage for patients with emergent, urgent, and traumatic surgical needs. In January of 2015, the program was renamed Trauma & Acute Care Surgery (TACS). Dr. Finley served as the Medical Director for TACS from its inception until 2016.  He also served as a Surgical Provider Informaticist with Providence St. Joseph Health System, optimizing the use of an electronic health record (EHR) in the care of surgical patients.  He completed his MBA at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in the spring of 2020.
